St. Clare-Newport enjoys an excellent reputation for the care and nurturing of elders and their families and is consistently ranked as among the best facilities in the area. We are renovating and expanding our existing 47-bed skilled nursing facility on Spring Street in Newport to meet the long term care needs of our community. The expansion and renovation will add 13 skilled nursing beds, 40 new independent/assisted-living units, an adult day care program, a memory care unit and a dedicated rehabilitation program. The renovation transforms St. Clare into a “small house” model nursing care facility. It improves upon traditional skilled nursing home models by adding assisted/independent living facilities and altering size, design and organization to create a warm, welcoming community environment. The renovation will enhance our staff’s ability to provide privacy, autonomy, support, comfort and dignity to elders and their families. The project will create household living environments that offer residents private rooms and baths arranged around a central living room, kitchen and dining area. This design will allow St. Clare to provide services to elders in a home setting. Additionally, the independent /assisted living units will be convertible. An elder who begins in an independent unit may eventually need services which can be delivered readily without requiring relocation to another unit. Thirty percent of these units will be available for low-income residents. Both the assisted living and the household model nursing home will offer separate, secure environments for those individuals who require this due to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. Similarly, the day care for elders will also provide this security and robust programming for those in the community who require these services but are not quite ready for 24-hour care. Finally, the new outdoor space at St. Clare-Newport will include therapeutic gardens, walking paths and fountains designed by a landscape architect specializing in design for geriatric populations. The proposed project will be built on St. Clare Home’s current 1.62 acre property situated along Spring Street between Dennison and Brewer Streets. A new building, along with an underground parking garage will be built on the west side of the property and the existing nursing facility will be completely renovated. St. Clare’s distinctive and beautiful stone chapel with adjoining convent, built in 1916, will be restored and serve as the centerpiece of the new facility. Architectural design will integrate with surrounding structures and enhance the aesthetic beauty of the neighborhood. Additional parking and newly designated areas for pick-up/drop off and deliveries will improve traffic flow, making the neighborhood safer and more convenient for residents and pedestrians. The environmentally friendly, low impact design practices will make St. Clare-Newport a green and sustainable skilled nursing facility.
